Wilco, de befaamde band uit Chicago, maakte afgelopen week bekend dat  het nieuwe album Star Wars 30 dagen lang – tot 13 augustus – gratis gedownload kan worden via wilcoworld.net en anti.com. Star Wars is het negende studio-album van Wilco, het eerste sinds The Whole Love, uit 2011 alweer.

Star Wars zal ook beschikbaar zijn via streaming services als Spotify, Apple en Deezer. Op 21 augustus zal het album officieel uitkomen op cd en via betaalde download. De vinylversie van de plaat komt later uit, op 27 november.

Wilco, al ruim twintig jaar actief, staat bekend als pionier als het gaat om pre-releases van albums en het gratis beschikbaar stellen van muziek. Al in 2001, met de doorbraakrelease Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, was hier sprake van. Voor de band blijft het uitbrengen van albums een leuke onderneming op deze manier.

“Why release an album this way and why make it free? Well, the biggest reason, and I’m not sure we even need any others, is that it felt like it would be fun,” aldus Jeff Tweedy. “What’s more fun than a surprise? Enough of this 20th anniversary already, here’s something fresh.”

Star Wars werd opgenomen in thuisstad Chicago in de loft van de band en bevat 11 nieuwe songs. Het is niet de enige release dit jaar; het eigen label dBpm bracht eerder dit jaar al twee jubileumverzamelaars uit: Alpha Mike Foxtrot, een box set vol zeldzame opnamen en What’s Your 20?, een compilatie van nummers van de eerste acht Wilco-albums.

“We’ve been feeling very fortunate lately being reminded of how long we’ve been able to do this,” zei Tweedy onlangs. “We believe one of the primary reasons for our good fortune has been our audiences reaction to our impulse to be heard and our habit of erring on the side of that desire to override financial ambition. Not that we don’t enjoy getting paid. We do. But this is a recommitment to the idea that music is more important to our lives. Art is more worthy of our striving. And fun is more sustaining than cash. It’s not intended to be a comment on the music business, just one band’s wish to give our fans a jolt of joy: a fun surprise. In that spirit we hope you will accept this gift and if not, well, maybe next time.”
