Wat een ongelooflijke trits lekkere singles hebben Gorillaz toch gemaakt! De CD/DVD compilatie The Singles Collection 2001 – 2011 laat 10 jaar onvervalste krakers horen.

Hoewel het laatste album The Fall een wisselvallige aangelegenheid was, boeiden hun eerste 3 albums natuurlijk optimaal. Vooral de eerste 2 albums Gorillaz en Demon Days brachten een heerlijke lading hits: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Rock The House, Tomorrow Comes Today, Kids With Guns, DARE, Feel Good Inc en Dirty Harry. Natuurlijk was de eerste single Stylo (met die Bruce Willis clip) van hun derde album Plastic Beach ook een onvervalste klassieker. De energieke mix van pop, reggae, hiphop, alternative en wat al niet meer is dan ook onweerstaanbaar.

Damon Albarn (Blur) en vriend/cartoonist Jamie Hewlett wisten met Gorillaz een waar fenomeen en miljoenen albums verkopende band te creëren. Een band die eerst vooral niet live maar via clips en korte films met een fictieve band met cartoonhelden 2D, Noodle. Murdoc Niccals en Russel Hobbs een aanstekelijke en lekker onduidelijke band had. Pas veel later besloot Albarn met bevriende muzikanten, zoals Paul Simonon en Mick Jones (The Clash), samen het podium op te gaan en indruk te maken. Juist de mix van film/video en hun zeer aanstekelijke muziek maakte Gorillaz zo’n wereldwijd fenomeen. Juist doordat The Collection 2001 – 2011 een CD en DVD bevat biedt het een fijn overzicht van 10 jaar Gorillaz.
