Jazzpionier Chick Corea is afgelopen dinsdag 9 februari op 79-jarige leeftijd overleden, zo is door zijn familie bekend gemaakt. Hij overleed aan een niet veel voorkomende vorm van kanker die pas kort geleden ontdekt werd.

Corea was een van de grootste namen binnen de jazz die zich net zo gemakkelijk binnen de avant-garde, bebop en fusion bewoog als dat hij zich op kamer muziek en symfonische muziek richtte. Een bizar ontwikkeld muzikaal talent dat hem met composities als Spain, 500 Miles High, La Fiesta, Armando’s Rhumba en Windows echte jazz evergreens opleverde.

Hij werd, zoals zoveel grote jazzhelden, opgepikt door Miles Davis die hem einde jaren zestig in zijn band groots liet debuteren als toetsenman op albums als Bitches Brew, Black Beauty: Live at the Fillmore West en Miles Davis at Fillmore: Live at the Fillmore East. Albums die de geboorte van de jazz fusion bewerkstelligden.

Na zijn samenwerking met Miles vormde Corea het revolutionaire Return To Forever waarbinnen hij de fusion-revolutie voortzette. En over de decennia maakte hij zijn naam als de belangrijkste toetsenmannen binnen de jazz, naast Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett en Bill Evans, optimaal waar.

Hij werkte over de jaren met een ontelbaar aantal muzikanten die binnen de jazz belangrijk waren en die hem inspireerde muzikaal weer dieper te graven. Hem uitdaagden. Hij was daarnaast een grote inspiratie voor vele jonge muzikanten, zo werd onder meer de jonge bassist Avishai Cohen in één van zijn trio’s opgenomen, net als John Pattitucci en Dave Weckl, om er maar een paar te noemen). De inspiratie die Miles verkreeg door zich steeds weer door jonge gretige muzikanten te laten omringen was daar de oorsprong in.

Corea was er altijd op uit om zich nieuwe muziek eigen te maken. Hoewel vanuit de jazz voortgekomen, het genre waar zijn grote liefde lag, ontwikkelde hij in latere jaren een grote liefde voor de klassieke muziek waaruit hij veel inspiratie putten voor eigen nieuwe composities. Hij gebruikte zijn muziek ook om sociale misstanden in de maatschappij aan te stippen en was niet onbevreesd zijn mening te geven.

Hoewel de jaren begonnen te tellen leed zijn spelplezier daar bepaald niet onder. Zoals bij het statement op facebook te lezen stond: ‘It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun’.

Throughout his life and career, Chick relished in the freedom and the fun to be had in creating something new, and in playing the games that artists do.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a great mentor and friend to so many. Through his body of work and the decades he spent touring the world, he touched and inspired the lives of millions.

Though he would be the first to say that his music said more than words ever could, he nevertheless had this message for all those he knew and loved, and for all those who loved him:

“I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.

“And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly—this has been the richness of my life.”
