Op 26 maart zal er een zeer bijzonder album verschijnen van het Britse Floating Points waarop de Amerikaanse jazzlegende Pharoah Sanders een voorname rol speelt. Net als het London Symphony Orchestra. Het album is getiteld Promises.

Het was een project dat San Shepherd (Floating Points) vijf jaar geleden reeds startte en hij vorig jaar, ondanks corona en alle restricties toch eindelijk kon afmaken. Veel informatie is er nog niet bekend maar datgene we al konden horen klinkt schitterend.

Atmosferisch, hypnotiserend, muziek van de toekomst zijn de eerste gedachten die binnen kwamen. Iets heel anders en nieuws dan we van Sanders, één van de koningen van de spiritual jazz, en van Shepherd al kenden.

Het album komt uit via het altijd innovatieve New Yorkse Luaka Bop. Ooit opgezet door David Byrne en vanaf de eerste releases gerund door de illustere Yale Evelev. Het vijf jaren traject Promises kwam tot stand in een nauwe samenwerking tussen Shepherd, Evelev en Luaka Bop’s Eric Welles Nystrom.

No no… I was listening… and dreaming… and listening to music in my head…

 

Oh wow… sorry.

Many times, people think I might be asleep… but in fact, I am just listening to music in my head. I’m always listening… to the sounds around me… and playing, in my mind… and sometimes I dream.

 

What were you dreaming about?

I’m on a ship. In the ocean. Bears coming around smoking cigars. The bears are singing, ‘We have the music. We have what you’re looking for.’

 

How you like that take, Sam?

It’s cool. I think the bit in the middle, where it stops again…I think you can hear…We were both kind of confused. I like it as well because it sounds like two musicians that are trying to guide each other.

 

I think that’s it right there. It came out different. It came out good though.
