Klaar voor de doorbraak: Rival Sons
In het Verenigd Koninkrijk worden ze sinds hun digitale EP the next big thing genoemd. Rival Sons lijkt inderdaad voorbestemd voor grootse muzikale prestaties. Collega Carl was al eerder lovend over hun titelloze EP. Onlangs hebben ze in 20 dagen hun tweede album Pressure & Time opgenomen. Zanger Jay Buchanan zei over de opnamen: “In the code of the Samurai, any decision must be made between three and five breaths… Writing by that code forces us to act, go with our instincts and really, truly listen to each other. Creatively, you’re bringing your most immediate instincts.” Pressure & Time werd geproduceerd door Dave Cobb en verschijnt op 20 juni bij Earache Records.
Rival Sons verzorgt het voorprogramma van Judas Priest op hun afscheidstour waarop ook Queensryche van de partij zal zijn. Eind jaren zeventig werd Black Sabbath compleet van het podium geblazen door de jonge honden van Van Halen. We voorspellen dat Judas Priest hetzelfde gaat overkomen met Rival Sons op het podium. De band is ook op het vaste land van Europa te zien en wel op het Rock Werchter festival (2 juli).
De hoes van het nieuwe album werd ontworpen door Storm Thorgerson die eerder werkte voor Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis en Dream Theater. Thorgerson besloot zijn medewerking te verlenen omdat hij de muziek van de band gewoon goed vindt. Over het artwork: “In the end I had just two weeks to the final cover, which really isn’t long enough. But it appears that Scott (Holiday, guitar) and Jay (Buchanan, vocals) both like it for different reasons, although I’m not sure what those might be. But there again, for a band to choose a cover they didn’t like would be daft.”
Gitarist Scott Holiday over de hoes: “We got the record done in just 20 days. That’s what we‘re like, very visceral and spontaneous. Storm, though, is almost the opposite. He’s high-minded and very artistic. In all, the artwork took about four weeks to come together. But what’s he done is so cool.”
