De Britse rockband Spooky Tooth was eigenlijk maar 6 jaar echt actief en bijna per jaar in wisselende formaties. Alle albums die ze uitbrachten voor platenlabel Island zijn nu verzameld in een mooie boxset. Ook bijgesloten zit het album Supernatural Fairy Tales van Spooky Tooth voorloper ART en een niet eerder uitgebracht live-album opgenomen in 1972.

Ondanks de relatief korte tijd van bestaan en de vele formatiewisselingen wist Spooky Tooth toch een legendarische status op te bouwen. Natuurlijk heeft dat te maken met de voor die tijd verrassende rockbandopzet met twee keyboardspelers, op piano en orgel. De band vormde zich als The V.I.P’s maar veranderde hun naam naar ART met het tot de band toetreden van de door labelbaas Chris Blackwell voorgedragen zanger/toetsenman Gary Wright.

Wright schreef vrijwel alle songs voor het eerste Spooky Tooth-album It’s All About. Het album dat de band gelijk katapulteerde naar grote bekendheid. De combinatie Gary Wright (keyboards, zang), Mike Harrison (gitaar, zang), Luther Grosvenor (gitaar), Mike Kellie (drums) en Greg Ridley (bas) bleek een ideale combinatie. Niet alleen in de studio overtuigde de band maar op het podium des te meer. Daar werd ook de basis gelegd voor hun meesterlijke tweede album Spooky Two, dat met tracks als Better By You, Better Than Me (later nog gecovered door metalheads Judas Priest op hun klassieker Stained Glass uit 1978), Lost In My Dream en hun versie van Larry Weiss’ Evil Woman, als een absolute rockklassieker gezien kan worden. Spooky Two bleek ook het laatste album in de originele bezetting te zijn.

Met het meer experimentele Ceremony (1969), zonder Ridley, werd een nieuwe koers ingezet die maar moeizaam door het publiek werd geaccepteerd en Wright verliet dan ook de band. Het daarop volgende en wisselvallige The Last Puff (1970) leek het definitieve einde van de band. Maar in 1972 besloten Wright en Harrison met ondermeer Mick Jones (later Foreigner) Spooky Tooth opnieuw op te zetten. Er werden in deze periode nog drie albums gemaakt, waarvan de laatste, The Mirror, met Mike Patto als zanger. Daarna was het in 1974 echt met de band gedaan.

De diverse leden gingen zowel solo als dat ze in andere bands als Humble Pie (Ridley) en Mott The Hoople (Grosvenor veranderde zijn naam daarvoor naar Ariel Bender) verder gingen. Meest opvallende transformatie was wellicht die van Mike Kellie die tot de zeer invloedrijke punkrockband The Only Ones toetrad.

The Island Years (An Anthology) 1967 – 1971 bevat het ART-album en alle zeven albums die Spooky Tooth maakte. Een sterk live-album met opnamen uit Duitsland uit 1972 is ook bijgesloten. Op elk album zijn verrassende extra tracks te vinden. Van demoversies tot aan live-opnamen. Ook zit er in de box een mooi 48 pagina’s tellend boekje bijgesloten met een mooie geschiedschrijving van de band en veel niet eerder gepubliceerde foto’s.
